Preserve the exact display

Photograph the complete message, including spaces, punctuation and alternating screens. A code recalled later may differ by one character. Note whether it appeared during a cycle, while idle or in a diagnostic history screen.

Separate settings from detected conditions

On supported models, control-lock indications such as CL or LOC describe a setting. Drain, fill or balance alerts describe a condition the controls detected. Neither is a universal failed-component diagnosis.

Use brand and model together

The same letters can mean different things across brands and product families. Samsung dC, for example, requires model context rather than an unconditional online translation. A brand-only search is a starting point, not a model match.

Do not erase the best clue first

A generic reset may clear a display without correcting the cause. Record what you see before following any reset procedure in the exact manual. Avoid entering hidden service modes solely to search for more codes.

When no code appears

A visible leak, persistent wet load or unusual noise still deserves a clear description. Start with the symptom guide and explain what happens, when it happens and whether the condition repeats.
